Living in the middle of f***** nowhere : Onslow

20 december 2014 - Onslow, Australië

Last Tuesday I flew from Brisbane to Perth, and from Perth to Onslow. I arrived in Perth in the middle of the night and had to wait a few hours before my flight to Onslow the next morning. Had a nice little nap on one of the airport benches! Yea that's one of my favorite things of traveling, being able to sleep anywhere, anytime. I just didn't make sense, going all the way into the city and back for 3 hours, so I seriously didn't mind. The airplane to Onslow was a small charter plane with 20/30 seats and full of men. I love it already! Once we arrived and got out of the plane the view was..... Nothing....absolutely nothing. Just desert and dirt. The airport was a container where you could get your luggage and a few benches and tables. Interesting. Mike, the beadon bay manager picked me up and showed me around town. Literally just one street, 1 supermarket and 1 other hotel, oh and the famous Onslow Museum of course. But there's a beach!! Most important thing, so I am happy!! He showed me to my room, yes finally my own room. No more hostels, no more dorms, no more sleepless nights cuz of snoring guys or drunk girls. I got a few hours of sleep before my first shift started at the end of the day. The gave me my uniform and put me behind the bar. Boom 7 hours shift on my first day and I enjoyed it so much! All men, just men, Australian men with accents I couldn't understand and that in combination with names of beer and liquor I've never heard of made for some interesting conversations, but mostly a "sorry, what?!" From my part. But the next day it got heaps better and I kinda got the hang of it. So far, so good and I really am enjoying it. Today I had my third day and a double shift of 10 hours, so I'm exhausted right now. My body hasn't worked as hard as it did, since my ankle injury, so I have to get used to long hours on my feet again. But I must say, I'm not disappointed, my ankle doesn't hurt and it feels pretty good. The crew has their own room upstairs at the hotel. The bar and restaurant are downstairs and food is included, so I have nothing to worry about. Most of the people that work here are backpackers like me, so it's a fun group of young people. Last week has been hard work, but I'm getting better every day, physically and also with the accents and the brandnames. It's so much fun with my colleagues and the costumers, most of them are locals, living and working here in Onslow. It's a really small town, with only 600 people living there and there is a big mine site just outside the town.

It's almost christmas, but the christmas spirit is not really noticeable. The management doesn't want any x-mas decorations in the pub, bc the fire hazard and crazy drunk people playing with it of course. Because of the lack of a christmastree and probably also because of the weather, it just doesn't feel like christmas, so I downloaded some christmas songs and walked around like a crazy person with my x-mashat, to get in the christmas spirit.
